Restaurant #18 - Dairy Queen (July 28, 2011)

"Where It All Began"

Back in October of 2010, Ryan and I were dining on some fine ice cream and conversation in Dairy Queen with our significant others when we came upon the great idea of what it would be like to eat in every restaurant in Quakertown.  Fast forward to 9 months later, where we are starting to begin the "D" section of the restaurants in Quakertown.  We do have several restaurants left that start with "C" but most of those are in Q Mart which are only open on weekends, or the others have really weird hours and close early. Therefore, Ryan and I will have to make extra time for those, so we began looking into restaurants that start with "D" and came upon Dairy Queen.

Dairy Queen is obviously known for their ice cream and blizzards, but does anyone really eat an actual dinner there?  Well, we did, and we actually enjoyed it!  Ryan and I both decided to order the 6 piece chicken tender basket which comes with your choice of sauce.  We both chose the homestyle white chicken gravy, which was the cashier's recommendation.  The basket came with fries and a drink, and at DQ, all the drinks come with free refills! (BONUS)  As we got our food (which was cooked and put together at a high rate of speed), we noticed that every table in DQ was dirty, and some even had trash.  It made for an unpleasant atmosphere when you are trying to eat a french fry but your hand is stuck to the table because of BBQ sauce left over from the previous customer.

The chicken tenders were nice and crispy and were fresh out of the oven.  They had a tender taste and only one out of my six was a little bit too chewy for me.  The gravy was an awesome addition and made for a delicious meal.  If you don't like the gravy though, you can get BBQ sauce, honey mustard, ranch, etc. as a replacement.  We topped off the meal with a free refill and we struggled not to buy ice cream to finish it off with dessert, as we are on a budget :)

It was a good meal overall, but the cleanliness factor is important to us and that should be a top priority for any business.

Restaurant #17 - China Wok (July 7, 2011)

"Was Voted Top 100 Chinese Healthy Menus in the US in 2010"

And so it was, 17 restaurants later, Ryan and I were headed through the doors of China Wok.  This chinese restaurant is different from most little "hole-in-the-wall" chinese restaurants.  China Wok actually has plenty of booths so that you can sit in the restaurant and enjoy your meal as opposed to being limited to take out.  We decided to do just that, and shortly after, the waiter/cook/cashier came out and gave us a menu and ordered our drinks.  Ryan, as usual, ordered a water with a diet coke.  I am cheap, so I just order a water every time.  The waiter then brought out Ryans coke in a can, like one you would get in a vending machine.  If anything, pour the can of soda in a glass to make it look more presentable!

Once again, Ryan and I ordered our favorite Chinese dish, General Tso's Chicken, with a side of rice and an egg roll.  Our egg rolls arrived almost immediately after and served as a nice appetizer.  We weren't too impressed with the eggrolls, but that's okay because the main entree made up for it.  We didn't have to wait to long to receive our food.  The general Tso's chicken was cooked to perfection!  Each piece was nice and crisp on the outside and a little chewy on the inside making a perfect texture.  It is a little spicy which added a nice "bite" to it but if you don't like spicy foods, be sure to tell them that upon ordering.  The rice was done very well and had pits of meat and peas mixed in as well.  My two pieces of broccoli were not as warm as I would have liked but after all, I am not a huge fan of brocolli to begin with.  The sauce on the general Tso's chicken was delicious as well!  The menu had so many choices that you could come back again and again and order something new every time!

The best part:  I now have leftovers for another lunch! Hooray!

Now for some areas of improvement:  Since our "waiter" was a cook, cashier and everything in between, I never got a refill on my water and was left to suck on ice cubes as my tongue was burning from all the spices.  At the end of the meal, we sat there for a good 10 minutes until another lady that was working there came out and asked us if I wanted a box for my leftovers.  Finally, our "waiter" came out later and we had to ask him for our check in which he replied that we need to come out in the lobby to pay.  It was confusing and we wasted time just waiting.  There should be a sign or something!

I recommend the food at China Wok because the General Tso's chicken is some of the best General Tso's that I have ever had!  However, the service and environment could use some work!

**China Wok is open 7 days a week and they do accept credit cards, but not checks!**

Restaurant #16 - Caitlyn & Cody's Diner (June 23, 2011)

"The Diner With An Identity Crisis"

For this adventure of Eating Thru Quakertown, Derek and I headed out to a new dining joint located right off the Quakertown exit on 476 named Caitlyn & Cody's Diner. Located conveniently off of the turnpike, C&C's does not really have any serious competition to the weary traveler.  It is either stop at C&C or wander into the heart of Quakertown a good 5 to 10 minutes away.
We were extremely excited to try out a new restaurant, so upon entering the building, our morale was way up.
That was up until it was time to be seated. The building is pretty big and it is made up of about 75% seating (including bar seating) and 25% of the space is an arcade. ( I know, I know, you're asking "Why does the diner have an arcade?"  We figured it out a little later and so will you).  We were seated practically in the entrance of the restaurant, but we were still ready to chow down. Looking over the menu, we discovered that the menu really was limited in options. When our waitress came, we asked what she recommended. Her first response was "anything but steak" as she proceeded to inform us that the steaks were not done well and she would recommend that we not get them. She then finally recommended the Nachos and the French Dip. So that is exactly what we ordered.
After having been in the restaurant for about 30 minutes, we figured out why the arcade was there. They put it there so that you would have something to do while waiting the overwhelming long time that it takes for your food to arrive. So make sure that you bring some extra cash for tokens. As far as arcades go, they had some pretty good options from racing to skee ball and the games were reasonably priced. We had enough time to race cars and motorcycles and when we came back our food had finally arrived.
We had the Nachos for appetizers, but be ready though if you want more than just chips and cheese because you will need to shell out double the price. The nachos were good and they were loaded up pretty well, as you would expect for the price. While we were sitting there, we commented on how much seating there was available in the dining area, but to our surprise, 5 minutes later, they sat someone down at the table literally elbows length away. They had plenty of table choices but they decided to sit this man down so close he could have been sitting at our table. Things were not going so well up until this point.
However, when our french dip came we were very optimistic. The sandwich and fries looked great. The looks were not deceiving. The sandwich was very full of flavor, even if it was a little soggy (they pour the au jus on the sandwich before bringing it out).  The fries were crisped to perfection. Finally we were done eating and the bill was brought out to us. Start severing an arm or a leg because as far as diners go, this one will cost you. We waited in line, paid our bill and grabbed one more game of skee ball. Walking out the door, we had pretty much decided we would not be coming back unless the restaurant were to drastically improve.

Restaurant #15 - Broadway Cafe (June 16, 2011)

"Chicago, Rent, Stomp, Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, Broadway Cafe"

Broadway Cafe sits right in the heart of Quakertown, and right across the street from the train station.  A rather small restaurant, this cafe seats maybe 20 people at the most.  As Ryan and I approached the cafe, we realized that you have to park on the street and there are parking meters as well.  It is 25 cents for 2 hours, so it's not very expensive, but certainly can be a nuisance if you don't have any loose change on your floormats.  As Ryan and I opened the door to Broadway Cafe, we were hit with a smell that took us back to the days of our birthday parties held at Earl Bowl Lanes.  Yes, the cafe had a very pungent smell: that of a bowling alley.  It was not a pleasant smell needless to say.  The front of the cafe has 2 large windows and it seemed kind of bland and empty.  We would have liked to see some more decorations in the window fronts that made us feel like we were entering into a Broadway setting!  We seated ourselves and looked over the menu before the waiter approached us.  There was only one waiter working and 2 cooks in the back.

I ordered the Broadway Burger because according to the menu, it was their "House Specialty."  I added lettuce, tomato and onion on the burger for no charge, and I also added american cheese as well for an extra 30 cents.  I also ordered a small order of chili cheese fries, made with Mr. J's chili (Mr. J is the owner and cook).  Ryan ordered a cheesesteak with sauce and onions, as well as a large order of cheese fries.  We waited a good 10-15 minutes for our food, as there were about 10 other people there at the time.  When we received our fries, the first thing that Ryan and I noticed was that the cheese on the fries consisted of 2 slices of American cheese melted onto the top.  Once you at the 10 fries on the top, it was as if you ordered a regular side order of fries.  I wasn't a big fan of the chili that was on my chili cheese fries, but the fries itself were excellent!

I also noticed that I never received cheese on my burger.  When the waiter came over, I just informed him that there was no cheese on my burger and that I just wanted to make sure I wasn't charged the extra 30 cents.  He apologized and informed me he would take it off my bill.  A few minutes later, Mr. J himself came over and asked us how we were enjoying our meal and apologized again for not putting the cheese on my burger.  I thanked him and said it wasn't a big deal, but in order to right a wrong, he offered Ryan and I free ice cream on them.  We certainly took them up on the offer and the ice cream was delicious!  We were very impressed that the owner personally apologized and did whatever he had to in order to please his customers.  That was very professional and we respected that!

Overall, the gesture by the owner was very polite and we were very appreciative.  We feel as though the front entrance should be worked on in order to look more appealing. The inside of Broadway Cafe has many different pictures and it has a Broadway theme, but the outside could use work.  We also felt as though there should be music played softly in the background.  It was quiet in the restaurant and you could hear your voice echo through the high ceilings.  There was even a jukebox there, but it didn't appear to be running!  The menu was very limited, but all the items on the menu were $6.25 or less!  This could make for a nice, cheap date!

Restaurant #14 - Chilkoots (May 26, 2011)

"The Best Elk Burger in Quakertown"

Chilkoots: Home of Alaskan cuisine!  Elk burgers, iditarod dogs.  You can't beat the price and you can't beat the quality and experience! (Unless you hop on a plane, travel 4,500 miles and grab an elk burger).  Chilkoots sits in a strip mall right next to Bon Ton on the 309.  With it's bright colorful sign and lit up "open" signs, you can't miss it!  The restaurant atmosphere was pretty relaxed and the inside had a "fast food" feel to it.  You can either take out or dine in, and Ryan and I chose to dine in, obviously.  (It is one of our rules, after all!)

We were given a menu, which was just typed up on a paper and folded into a brochure.  Chilkoots has a lot of food to offer!  They have cheesesteaks, burgers, ribs (which I have heard to be delicious), soups, appetizers such as wings, fries, onion rings, etc.   Ryan and I wanted to try something that you don't find every day in Quakertown.  Ryan ordered the Elk burger which comes with horseradish sauce.  However, he substituted the horseradish sauce with BBQ sauce and cheese.  The BBQ sauce is homemade!  I ordered the Alaskan Iditarod hot dog with cheese.  This was a larger verson of what I know of as a hot dog, but it did taste a bit different from your typical Hatfield Ballpark Franks.  We also ordered cheese fries, as those are a fan favorite at Chilkoots, according to our waitress.

Our waitress was very polite and eager to serve us.  She always had a smile on her face, and even though we arrived 50 minutes before closing time, both the cook (and owner), and waitress were very happy to chat and serve us to make sure that we had a great first experience.  The cook served our county years ago and found himself living in Alaska for 9 years as a result.  After that, he then found his way back to Bucks County after growing up in this area as a kid.  However, he brought with him, the delicacies and culture of Alaska and decided to start Chilkoots.  The owner, Stacy, said that he likes to hear feedback from his customers and in turn, it helps him to figure out what works and what doesn't.  Stacy, the food was delicious and filling and Ryan and I are pretty sure that we won't need to eat for another week now!  The flavors were amazing and Ryan could not stop talking about your homemade BBQ sauce.  Thank you for a great experience and for being so welcoming and friendly!  It certainly made for an enjoyable experience.  We will certainly come back and visit again!  To our waitress, thank you for your kind service!  That really stood out and it's the customer service that brings back customers!  (And the awesome cheese fries).

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT?  Chilkoots is a great experience to try some Alaskan cuisine that you don't see everyday!  They could certainly improve their menus.  Make them colorful and stand out to the customer, and maybe laminate them, so they don't get dirty or damaged?  The same goes for the posters hanging along the counter.  Some of the posters were bent a little, so maybe laminate those, just to touch them up and keep them fresh.  The food and services was great and we really appreciated it!

Restaurant #13 - Chick-fil-A (May 12, 2011)

"Eat Mor Chikin"

Ah, the infamous Chick-fil-A.  This restaurant is not your typical fast food restaurant.  Chick-fil-A specializes in chicken sandwiches and I am sure you have all tried them at some point in your life.  Now before we get started on this post, please remember that Ryan and I rate each restaurant with previous visits out of sight and out of mind.  We rate each food junction as if it was our first time stepping foot in the building.

As we pulled up to the Chick-fil-A nestled between a Wawa and Red Robin on 309, we noticed that the parking was already very limited.  There happened to be a fundraiser night on this fine Thursday evening for Trumbauersville Elementary School.  10% of your food purchase went towards benefiting this elementary school.  As a result, there were many families and children and seating was becoming hard to find.  It was very busy as we arrived, so we had to stand in line for several minutes before we could order.  I ordered a Chargrilled chicken sandwich deluxe meal (which comes with bacon and cheese) and a root beer and Ryan ordered a regular chicken sandwich meal (no pickles, of course) and an 8 piece chicken nugget along with a sweet tea.  We were very excited about our waffle fries and the many sauces available to us.  I chose the honey mustard sauce to accompany my fries and the buffalo sauce to add extra "zing" to my sandwich.  Ryan chose the BBQ sauce for his sandwich and fries.  We received our food and searched high and low for a seat.  It was rather noisy and busy inside for us, so we took advantage of the pleasant weather and ate at the tables that they had located outside.

We immediately noticed that the waffle fries were cooked nicely.  They were a little crunchy (and not mushy like some other fast food joints) and they were actually hot!  It was nice to know that our fries were actually cooked on the spot and not leftover from the previous day.  Our sandwiches were hot as well and definitely did not disappoint.  The sauces that were added to the sandwiches created an extra bite to it and made for a delicious meal.  One of the best parts about Chick-fil-A is that we get free refills after the meal too!  However, don't make the same mistake that I did and throw away your cup by accident. (oops.)

The service was pretty good considering how busy it was.  Each cashier had a friendly smile on his or her face and they were genuinely pleasant with each customer that they came across.  The only complaint that we have is that it was a little busy and overcrowded.  However, Chick-fil-A was benefiting this elementary school and raising awareness in the community.  They put on a lot of fundraisers at various Chick-fil-A's to help support their community.  It is definitely for a great cause!

It is a relatively cheap night out and Chick-fil-A also accepts cash and cards!

Restaurant #12 - Bochi's Homemade Food (April 21, 2011)

"Great Flavor From Argentina to the World"

Ryan and I took advantage of the beautiful weather last evening and ate at Bochi's Homemade Food.  Bochi's is located in the heart of Quakertown and if you are familiar with Quakertown, (which you all should be by now) Bochi's is attached to the old Rita's Water Ice.  Bochi's is a little shop with no seating indoors.  The seating consists of two picnic tables located right outside in front of the shop.  This allows you to enjoy the nice weather and take in the smells of home cooked empanadas.  As we were deciding what to order, we noticed that all the signs (menus) that were posted on the front of the empanada stand could use some color to them as they were simply printed off of Microsoft Word 97.  Unsure of what empanadas actually were, the lady at the stand showed us that they are about the size of pierogies.  I ordered 3 empanadas and a small soda (which is actually just a normal size soda can), and Ryan ordered the special and bought 6 empanadas and got TWO free.  He had to order his soda separate.  There are about 12 different flavors to choose for your empanadas and the best part is that they let the customer choose flavors and mix them up.  Naturally, we had to order every flavor available, with the exception of tuna and veggie.  The flavors we ordered were:

-Beef
-Chicken
-Ham & Cheese
-Spicy Chicken
-Spicy Beef
-Cheese & Onions
-BBQ Pork (Our Favorite!)
-Pepperoni and Cheese
-Sweet Corn  (Least Favorite)

We were immediate lovers of Bochi's empanadas.  The outside crust of the empanada reminds me of a chalupa that you would get at Taco Bell (For you Taco Bell lovers out there).  We struck up conversation with the cashier (and owner) of Bochi's.  Her and her husband (the cook) run Bochi's from 11 AM - 8 PM, Monday to Monday.  They are originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina.  They moved to the United States 6 months ago and opened Bochi's 3 months ago.  It turns out that these empanadas are a specialty in Argentina!  In fact, most of the food at Bochi's is a specialty in Argentina. It is not Mexican food!

After our love for empanadas was discovered, we decided not to stop there.  We ordered two flans (dessert), and one special Bochi's tarta.  We received the flans first and they came right out of the fridge, very cold.  I, personally, have never had a flan and didn't know what to expect.  Ryan has had a few flans in his time and of all the ones he has tasted, they have been heated and warm.  This one looked like it was baked at one point ( I sure hope so since a main ingredient is eggs), but the flan was cold and mushy and a little chunky.  It reminded me of rice pudding, which I am not a fan of.

At this point, we were waiting for our special Bochi's tarta to be heated up.  The tarta was huge and looked like a small cake.  We were excited and ready to dig in.  The tarta consisted of: Cooked ham, cheese, bacon, tomato, sweet peas, and eggs.  This sounded very delicious to us and finally the time was ready to experience what a tarta tasted like.  As we bit into the tarta, unfortunately, we experienced what a luke warm, mostly cold tarta tasted like.  I think it would have tasted a lot better if it were heated up 5 minutes longer!

Overall, the empanadas were excellent!  However, the flans and tartas need a little bit of work.  I expect all of you to visit Bochi's and order yourself some empanadas!  The prices are very reasonable and the employees are very kind!

**Bochi's only accepts cash, so make sure you have cash handy!**

Also, Bochi's offers Takeout, Delivery, and Catering.  Be sure to check out their website at http://www.bochisfood.com/ for a complete menu!

Our original rating was leaning towards a 4/5, but due to the disappointing flans and tartas, we dropped it to a 3/5.

Restaurant #11 - Bubbas Potbelly Stove (April 9, 2011)

"Real Good Food....Real Good People"

Bubbas Potbelly stove is located along 309 right before you enter Coopersburg.  Ryan and I headed to Bubbas ready to chow down on some good cookin.  The parking lot was packed when we arrived, and this was a good indicator that Bubbas was going to be something worthwhile!

The inside of Bubbas had a "cabin feel" to it and reminded me of the days when I would build homes with lincoln logs and then my gi-joe would take over and destroy them in battle.  As Ryan and I stood against the wall waiting to be seated, we noticed that Bubbas had quite a few plaques with awards and news articles hanging along the wall displaying their presence in the media.  It was nice to know that Bubbas has a presence in Quakertown and by the looks of it, everyone loves Bubbas.  Every table was packed and with Bubbas being on the smaller side, Ryan and I were placed at a table not even arms length away from a family.  The atmosphere felt a little cramped but it wasn't keeping business away!

Ryan ordered a Montgomery burger which consists of bacon and cheese.  Each burger comes with lettuce, tomato, onions, a pickle and chips.  If you don't want those, make sure to clarify!  I ordered a burger that actually IS NO LONGER on the menu.  The waitress told me about it and it sounded delicious, as it was.   It was a burger with ham and cheese, and pineapple.  With lettuce, tomato and onions on top of that and a side of BBQ sauce, I had to unhinge my jaw like a 6 foot boa constrictor in order to succesfully fit the burger in my mouth.  We both wanted fries instead of chips (Who doesn't!?), so we had to pay extra for fries (They don't substitute).  However, it was SO worth it.  The fries reminded us of steak fries.  However, most steak fries are too mushy for Ryan and I, but Bubbas fries were perfect.  They were crispy and didn't taste like grease!  As Ryan and I looked around, we noticed that almost every person in Bubbas at the time had a bowl of French Onion Soup.  I asked the waitress about it and she said that the French Onion Soup is a popular among the locals.  I had to add that soup to the tab!  For $5.95 a bowl, I got a taste of what Bubbas is all about.  Filled to the brim with cheese, be sure to wear a bib because it will get messy!  I am not a huge fan of french onion soup (Or so I thought), but I know good soup when I taste it!  I highly recommend stopping by Bubbas and grabbing a bowl of this delicious soup.

Now Bubbas can be a little pricey.  If you aren't getting a sandwhich, then expect to spend at least $20 per person for the other entrees.  The refills are free which is nice, but since when do fries not come with a burger!?  We spent $5.90 I believe for 2 orders of fries.  The fries are delicious and it would be neat to see the fries added to the burger meal!!  **Note: On Wednesdays, they have a deal where you buy any burger and you get fries for free.  I might be checking that one out!

Bubbas can make for a nice night out if you are willing to spend a little more.  The food was pretty good and we left feeling very satisfied.  The atmosphere was a little cramped and it would be nice to have a little more room so the people next to us don't have to hear every word we say, and vice versa.  The price and the atmosphere took the rating down a little bit, but overall, we would go back!

Be sure to check out Bubbas website at http://www.bubbaspotbellystove.com/index.asp to see special promotions, hours and even view their menu!  Bubbas accepts cash and plastic!

Restaurant #10 - Captain Bob's Fresh Seafood (March 22, 2011)

"Ryan hates seafood, but loves Captain Bob's"

Captain Bob's is located in the heart of Quakertown, and on this fine Tuesday evening, two Admirals (I'm trying out some nautical terms in this blog) entered the restaurant and didn't know quite what to expect.  I enjoy seafood on occasion, but Ryan however gets a bit seasick at the thought of seafood.

The first thing that we noticed before entering is that there are two different entrances for C Bob's.  If you want take out, you enter one door where you can choose from a vast array of fish, fried or broiled.  Choices of fish include flounder, haddock, salmon, tilapia, catfish, tuna, swordfish.  You can also order delicacies such as clams, scallops, shrimp, crab cakes, fish cakes, oysters, etc.  If you want to eat in, you enter through the other door, and they have a window connecting the other room where you can order from.  Ryan and I chose to eat in (as is the rule with our restaurant adventures) and so we ordered, were given a number, and we then anchored our vessels and got our drinks.  We were excited to find out that if you pay an extra 50 cents, you can get free refills.  We are suckers for free refills!  Shortly after we sat down, our number was called.  The service was very fast and this made us very pleased.

I ordered Deviled Crabs because according to the menu, this is "Everyone's Favorite."  Ryan ordered Pop-Corn Shrimp and one deviled crab, because like me, he was curious.  Each platter comes with a side of french fries and cole slaw, although Ryan asked for more fries in replacement of the 'slaw.  The deviled crabs were outstanding although halfway through, Ryan worried me because he made me realize that I have no idea what exactly makes up a deviled crab cake.  However, that has never bothered me before.  The fries were delicious and thin and crisp.  Ryan enjoyed his pop-corn shrimp and even enjoyed his deviled crab cake.  Remember, he hates seafood, and that's not a lie.

The atmosphere was very pleasant and as we sat there, we felt as though we were eating lunch on the boardwalk at the beach.  The walls had a nice ocean blue tint to them and we were surrounded by 7 different posters of various marine life which took me back to my studies of marine biology in high school.  (I didn't really study marine biology in high school, but if I did, Captain Bob would have been my teacher.)  We also noticed that Captain Bob's has an awesome logo inside their restaurant.  It is almost 3D looking, and kind of hard to explain unless you go see it for yourself.  Unfortunately, they don't have the same logo on the outside!  The sign for Captain Bob's on the roof of the building is kind of bland looking and we think it would be neat to incorporate the 3D logo on the outside of the building as well!

Overall, we thought that the customer service was a nice help to Ryan and I and they were a very fast and efficient crew.  The food was delicious and cheap, especially with it all being seafood!  If you don't like seafood, we definitely recommend that you start with Captain Bob's Fresh Seafood and see what you think!  You can also check out their website for a menu at http://www.captainbobsseafood.com/.  Their site provides you with a full menu as well as their hours.  They also now accept plastic so if you don't have cash with you, that's okay!  So shove off, (that means to "To leave; to push a boat away from a pier or vessel's side") and come to Captain Bob's today!

Restaurant #9 - Big Richard's Steak Shop (March 20, 2011)

"If you take a seat, you need to eat"

Being the first day of spring and having beautiful weather, Derek and I decided to check out what the Quakertown Farmers Market had to offer. The focus of today's visit was to Big Richard's Steak Shop, also known to some as Big Richard's Sandwich Shop. Additionally, we broke away from our routine in that going to the Q-Mart sounded like a great double date so we both brought along our better halves. First off, entering the Q-Mart we had no idea where Big Richard's was so we went in one of the entrances and began to wonder in the direction we thought it may be. After passing an eclectic smorgasbord of shops and delis we finally spotted the Big Richard's Sign. Pay close attention because if you are walking to quickly or distracted, you will pass on by very easily without even noticing the restaurant.

We grabbed a table for four and began to contemplate what meal would have the opportunity to dance across our palates today. Be careful where you put your elbows while sitting down as we had some elbow sweater stick. The table of our choosing had not been visited by Mr. Clean, and it was awkwardly close to the ordering counter. The decisions were made and the result were four value meals. Two cheese steaks, one Webber, and one pork BBQ sandwich. The value meal started at about $5.50 which gave you the sandwich, fries and a drink, or you could up grade for another buck and half to a large. This meant receiving a club roll vs. a hoagie roll. The cheese steaks were anything but mind blowing, the Webber was not impressive (turns out you also have to pay more for lettuce and tomato), and the pork sandwich was good - having a tint of sugary sweetness to it. While half the the party (being the guys) liked the fries our counterparts pointed out that they thought they just tasted like grease.

Putting food aside, the service was up to par of that of your local DMV. I believe it would take a miracle to get a smile to break out on any of the employees faces, although, being in a windowless area, it can have that effect on you. We all just felt that there was no effort made to make us comfortable or to have us feel welcomed. Additionally, I ran into one of my greatest pet peeves... "no free refills". I just do not get it. You sucker me into paying a buck and a half for a cup of soda that costs you 10 cents, and then you have the audacity to not even give me one free refill. Throw a guy a bone here, and at least give one free refill, or refrain from putting the iceburg that sunk the Titanic in my cup so I get more than a table spoon of soda. (Sorry for ranting, no this is not the only restaurant that does this, but we are coming out of a long winter so you must forgive me).

While we were eating we had noticed that on the menu they also had fried oreos, twinkies and Snickers. I never turn down a snickers and when you throw it on a stick and deep fat fry it, it can only get better. I was quite pleased when I received my fried Snickers and couldn't wait to dig in. But, I quickly learned that a fat fried Snickers is about 200 degrees hotter than molten lava. Having now melted the entirety of my mouth, I was glad that I had allowed them to sucker me into buying a refill of Diet Pepsi off of them for a buck.

Overall the food was mediocre, the atmosphere was loud and sticky, and the service could use some courtousy training. The only thing that saved the trip was going to see the Q-Mart's diamond in the rough, Wally the alligator.

Restaurant # 8 - The Brick Tavern Inn (March 8, 2011)

"It's a Win-Win at The Brick Tavern Inn"

Thanks to an anonymous Quakertown sponsor, Ryan and I were able to dine out tonight, without the expense.  We are very grateful and if anyone else would like to sponsor us, shoot us an email at eatingthruquakertown@gmail.com.  You can remain anonymous if you would like as well!

Anyhoo, we finally were able to make it out to the Brick Tavern Inn on this fine Tuesday evening, after going on a hiatus for a few weeks.  Due to schedule conflicts, we had to miss a week and reschedule for a Tuesday rather than a Thursday, but food is food, and we worked around it!

As we pulled up to the Inn, we noticed the fresh landscape that surrounds the building and is very inviting.  Many different types of shrubs and trees line the perimiter of the restaurant and create a very nice atmosphere.  The inside of the inn was very fancy as each table was joined by a lone candle at the center of it.  Yes, two men in their early 20's eating dinner by candelight.  It made for an awkward meal.  We were even given cloth napkins (The kind where you have to unfold 10 times and put in your lap because it's the correct "etiquette" way).

We opened up the menu and noticed that if you want an entree, expect to pay at least $25.  We chose to each order a sandwich, which comes with fries, and then we ordered an appetizer as well.  Ryan ordered a Little Italy Chicken Sandwich which is grilled chicken, garlic, tomatoes, and spinach, toasted with Swiss and Provolone on a hoagie roll (Yes, I just typed exactly what it says on the menu).  I ordered the New York Reuben which is corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, 1000 island dressing, grilled on rye.    We also ordered an appetizer of chicken wings (half BBQ, half buffalo).

The chicken wings were good, although the buffalo wings were a bit spicy and if you have chapped lips, be careful, as the hot sauce loves to infect the chapped lips even more.  However, the Inn provides wet wipes so you can clean your hands thoroughly afterwards.  Ryan enjoyed his sandwich, although with the amount of spinach that they put on the sandwich, I thought I was at dinner with PopEye.  I enjoyed my reuben, but it was nothing "Earth shattering."  The service was good and our waitress was very friendly and came to check up on us many times.

Our only complaints were that it seemed to be a little dark inside the restaurant.  With it being candlelight, they dimmed the overhead lights making for a darker atmosphere.  The background music was at a good setting so I could still hear Ryan without having to shout for him to repeat himself.  We did spot a piano sitting against the wall unattended to, like a little puppy in a pet store.  We would have liked to see some live music and see what that piano can do!  However, if you visit http://www.thebricktaverninn.com/, you can see live music schedules, upcoming events, photographs, additional menu information and more!  We both recommend to check it out sometime as it makes for a nice evening out with the significant other or family and friends!

Restaurant #7 - Burger King (February 3, 2011)

"In sight - in mind"

**WE HAVE CHANGED THE RATING AFTER MUCH DEBATE.  WE WERE STILL NEW AT THE RATING SYSTEM AND AFTER REVIEWING IT, WE REALIZED QUICKLY THAT BURGER KING WAS NOT DESERVING OF A 3/5 STARS.  WE HAVE LOWERED THEM TO A 1.5.  **

Anyone who has driven through Hometown, America knows about Burger King and we have all seen the silly King commercials. BK has set itself apart from other fast food, with their flame grilled burgers like you would grill up on your backyard charcoal grill. We entered the restaurant and went through the cattle chutes to order our food. I wanted to order a BK Double Stacker, but I wasnt sure of what kind of sauce was put on the burger. When I asked the teen behind the counter what kind of sauce was on the burger, not only was he unable to tell me what kind of sauce it was, he did not even give it a thought to ask someone else what it was. I got it anyway out of a sense of adventure, and Derek ordered a grilled chicken sandwich. Then came something we hoped we would not see.

Preparing our food was a lanky kid who had to keep battling the curtain of hair fighting for his attention in his line of sight. He began to clear some lettuce off of the prep counter.  He then reached into a bucket of brackish water, wiped down the counter with a rag and then put it back into the bucket. To our horror, he kept the same latex gloves, that were now dripping wet, and without skipping a beat, grabbed for two rolls and started making our sandwiches. We got our food and soda and grabbed our seat. The fries were awesome, being crisped to perfection. My burger was good but I couldn't get the brackish water out of my mind. At one point I think I could have even smelled clorox on the bun. Derek liked his sandwich but it was really nothing to write home about.

Overall, the food was okay, the fries were great, the facility was clean and seemed like a good place to bring your family, because they have the play place that your children can enjoy and you can bring the whole family without having to take out a home equity loan to afford.

Restaurant #6 - Boston Market (January 6, 2011)

"The Best Thing to Come Out of Boston"

Enter Boston Market and you're punched in the nose by a scent that transports you back into your mom's kitchen, and suddenly, you're 7 years old all over again. With a brood of chickens on the rotisserie and looking through the glass case of all the sides, your taste buds start dancing and you can't help but salivate. Once again, Derek and I ordered the same thing, pretty much because great minds think a like. We both got a quarter of white chicken with a side of mac n' cheese, loaded mash potatoes, and as with all Boston Market meals, you get a piece of that delicious corn bread which I'm pretty sure uses corn harvested from the fields of heaven.

If you are expecting the regular fast-food experience where you're run through the cattle chutes, have the food tossed on your tray, only to march over to your table where they are hoping you will scarf down your food and get out, you will certainly be in for a treat at Boston Market.  The service was phenomenal!

When we paid for our meals, we were asked where we wanted to sit and then the girl who we ordered from carried our food over to the table for us. She then said something I've never heard at a fast food restaurant:  "Let me know if there is anything else you guys need". Whaaaaat!!!! How was this place ever owned by McDonald's?!  We dug into our food, and my feelings for the city with the baseball team I can't stand and where they wear red socks, slowly started to gain favor.

The Mac-n-Chesse tasted homemade and the loaded mashed potatoes were fantastic. My only issue was that my chicken could have used a little more time spinning on the old chicken heater. Derek's chicken, however, was crisped wonderfully. Boston Market has a very comfortable and welcoming environment with music playing over the speakers at a volume which can be heard but doesn't cause you to have to yell in a conversation. Also, we found it very unique that whenever fresh food was made from behind the counter, it was called out. For example, when there was fresh mashed potatoes, the person who made it called "Fresh hot mashed potatoes!" and the rest of the staff repeated in the same manner.

When we were done, an employee came and cleaned up our plates, threw our trash away and thanked us for coming.

Overall it was a pleasant experience, with good food, a manicured facility, and a great staff. The only complaint was about my chicken, and the fact that there was a kid dressed in street clothes hanging out behind the counter chatting it up with the employees. It just seemed a little unprofessional.

Restaurant #5 - Best Food In Town (December 23, 2010)

"No Shirt, No Shoes, No Cash, No Service (or heat)!"

When you throw the word "Best" in the name of your restaurant, you've got a lot of confidence and are setting the bar pretty high for yourself. Nestled between Kohls and K-Mart you need to pass by some restaurant giants to get to this little hole in the wall. Being one of the first and original chinese food establishments in Quakertown, Best Food (which it shall be known as from here on out) has built up a loyal following of locals.

The first thing you will notice when you enter Best Food is that they are clearly geared for mainly take-out, since there is only one table with four chairs in the entire restaurant. Whether eating in or taking out, to order, head to the counter, grab a pencil out of the cup of rice, and a menu off the pile on the counter. Circle on the menu what you want to order and hand it off to the polite and helpful employee behind the counter. Just make sure at this point if you desire to eat in or if you want a drink, make sure you inform them of this, if you don't they will assume your getting take-out and you will not be offered a drink. Pay for your meal IN CASH (oh noo-only have plastic on you, K-mart and First Niagara both have ATMs so you can grab some cash).

When that is taken care of grab a seat at the table if it's open.  If not, there is a line of chairs along the wall, so get ready to hold your meal on your lap. For us we scored the table, since there wasn't anyone at it. While waiting for your meal, you are able to enjoy the sight, sound and smell of your meal being prepared as the kitchen is exposed. When our meals first came out we were pleased with the amount of food our greenbacks got us. But now was the time to see if they deserved the title of "BEST". Being the General Tso's Chicken connoisseurs we are (meaning thats all we ever order) that is what we both ordered. Being the spicy pansy that I am, I ordered mine not spicy. We both received our plates of the general's chicken outlined with broccoli and served with a side plate of Mt. Rice which only an accomplished mountaineer could conquer. This is also when we first noticed that whenever the door opened, we were able to see our breath; that's right, no heat. So bring a good coat and some mittens if you're going in winter.

When beginning to shovel in the food, we noticed the broccoli was cold, and that in General Tso's terms it would not be considered the "Best" that Derek and I have had the pleasure of sliding across our taste buds. We could tell that maybe their focus was on quantity rather than quality, which is not how you become the best at anything.

Overall the facilities left much to be desired, the service was kind and helpful, but the food needed some help. Our suggestion is let others call you the best and don't set yourselves up that high, because when you're that high, there is only one way to go and for our experience, that was down.

Restaurant #4 - Beckers (February 17, 2011)

"We Beckon you to try Beckers!"

Flying down 563, it would be easy to pass by Beckers without a thought.  Located right across from Lake Nockamixon, Beckers, formerly known as Cappies Tavern, has completely revamped the way they do business.  Beckers is based out of what looks to be an old school house and has a comfortable, colonial feel to it. Inside, the walls are all exposed stone, with hardwood floors, which made for a warm and comfortable environment.  The restaurant seats around 35 people, including the bar.  The waitress was very friendly and helpful.  She knew the menu well and guided us to her favorite meals. While they had many flavors of wings, the waitress told us the crowd favorite is garlic parmesan.  Without hesitation, Ryan and I ordered them to start off our meal.  I highly recommend ordering an appetizer at first because we did wait a little while for our meal to arrive.  Ryan also ordered the blackened chicken sandwich with roasted red pepper, provolene and brandy cream sauce. I ordered the BBQ, bacon, pineapple and smoked gouda sandwich. Both meals were fantastic, although if you're coming from the lake, bring your life jackets with you because the blackened chicken sandwich can get kind of messy...but it was well worth it.

We also had a chance to meet the owner, John Becker. He was a down to earth guy who owns another restaurant with his wife in Lambertville.  Talking with the owner made us feel welcomed at Beckers and we will definitely be visiting again.

If you are visiting lake Nockamixon anytime soon, be sure to add Beckers to your itinerary.  We highly recommend it!!  Beckers also provides takeout, so stop by and grab a nice lunch to enjoy while sitting by the lake with your family and friends!

Restaurant #3 - Arby's (December 9, 2010)

"A Different Kind of Fast Food"

Arby's was definitely an unmemorable experience. The atmosphere was one which you would expect in any fast food restaurant. Tile floors, booth seats, empty ketchup dispensers, and little kids everywhere.

Ryan ordered chicken tenders and I ordered the cheddar roast beef sandwich. I was mostly excited about their curly fries and that is why I like Arby's. Their curly fries and roast beef sandwiches set them apart from other fast food restaurants and have made them into a notable franchise. The service was nothing to brag about.  Mediocre at best.  However, we were greeted from behind the counter as we arrived and when we left, a bell rang alerting everyone in the entire restaurant that we were retiring from the premises.  Nothing to exciting to report here...Until next time!

Restaurant #2 - Andrew's Restaurant & Deli (November 11, 2010)

"Order like a Deli, Served like a Restaurant"

Andrew's Deli is located right along 309 and has an inviting atmosphere as you enter the restaurant. As we entered the lobby, there was no direction as to whether we were to seat ourselves or if there was a hostess that was supposed to take us to a seat. we stood there looking around until the girl at the counter about 10 feet away asked us if we had ever been to Andrew's Deli before. Since we never had previously visited, she proceeded to explain how the ordering process worked. They were going through changes with the ordering process at the time, so they seemed rather unorganized. It was definitely a first impression that we will remember.

Ryan ordered an onion ring burger and added a side of mozzarella sticks spontaneously but had to leave an arm and a leg on the counter with the girl at the register because they were a bit pricey.  Yes, Ryan received five mozzarella sticks for over seven and half George Washingtons. That price isn't even including his burger! Supposedly the mozzarella sticks were pretty good, however, not the best. I ordered a BBQ bacon burger which had three strips of bacon and what appeared to be a bucket of BBQ sauce overflowing on my plate.
After we ordered our food, we received a buzzer which had been touched by everyone and their mom. It was designed to buzz and alert us when our food was ready to be picked up at the counter. With only about 8 people (us included) eating at the time, a buzzer seemed overkill. However, the buzzers provided much entertainment while our 5 o'clock shadows grew in. Finally, our buzzers lit up and Ryan rendezvous with the hostess halfway at the soda machine to get his food. I, however, had to trek across the restaurant to pick up my food.  It was certainly a bit confusing trying to figure out where to pick up my food.

Overall, the burgers were good but we both needed a shower afterwards, not to mention I had the worst stomach pains you could ever imagine. The atmosphere was nice because we sat next to the claw game. Do NOT be tempted by the claw game.  We watched 2 girls go through $5 trying to win a stuffed animal. It doesn't work. We could have told them that.

**Also, we realize that Andrew's Restaurant & Deli actually comes before Applebees alphabetically.  The reason for this is we forgot about this restaurant and it wasn't on our original list, so you may see restaurants added here and there that we originally didn't know about!**

Restaurant #1 - Applebees (October 28, 2010)

"Eating Good in the Neighborhood!"

Applebees.  I like apples but I hate bees.  Ryan and I went into Applebees obviously with prior history of what it was like.  We base our rating as if this is a completely new restaurant for us.

We were welcomed at the door and the one hostess held the door open for us and proclaimed "Welcome to Applebees!" as we entered.  I was ready to eat great even late...wait, that's Wendy's.

Anyway, we were seated, ordered our drinks and then quickly realized that our waiter was probably the most awkward person that I have ever met.  He seemed very uncomfortable and was basically socially awkward.  Ryan and I laughed it off and ordered our food.  I got chicken quesadillas and Ryan got a Cowboy burger.  The food was decent but I have had better quesadillas.  Most of the time, I could barely find the chicken and was just crunching on some cooked tortilla and cheese. yum.

We noticed halfway through our meal that there were about 6 applebees employees standing around a table laughing and joking around with each other.  Not good customer service if you ask me!  Also, my glass of water was bone dry at this point and our waiter was no where to be found.  At the end of the meal as he brought our check, he looked at me and stuttered, "oh, c-c-an I bring you more w-water?"  It was an interesting start to our adventure.

Who we are and What we do

This is Derek Overby reporting live with Ryan Landis.  We have come up with the idea of eating through all of the restaurants in Quakertown in alphabetical order.  Yes, that is a lot of restaurants and it will take some time, but we are determined.  We have a list of restaurants from Quakertown and so far, we have made our way through 6 of them...The idea of this blog is to inform you of restaurants to try out and some that you should consider avoiding.

We rate each restaurant based on a 5 point scale.  (5 points is the MOST AMAZING restaurant, and 1 point means run for your lives).  We rate each restaurant based on the appearance, customer service, cleanliness, environment and of course the food.

We want to hear your comments and if we missed any restaurants that you can think of, let us know!

We eat at these restaurants every other Thursday, and sometimes more, so we are looking at 2 restaurants a month.  We will begin posting soon about our recent excursions to the 6 restaurants.  Stay tuned!
